Writer’s Block is Another Way of Saying I am Scared and Lazy
How could you possibly have writer’s block in this day and age? Can’t think of a plot, have you ever heard of Craigslist? Don’t tell me there ain’t some interesting ish on there. What would your characters say about half of the stuff posted there? Would they be appalled? Frightened? Entertained, responding with an alias name and number?
When was the last time you went to a concert or a museum? You’re telling me you couldn’t be inspired? There’s all this freaking beauty in the world and you can’t write a freaking page, much less a sentence?
Stumble Upon, Flickr, Penelope Trunk, Gawkr, eBay, Seth Godin. None of these people or things would get a rise out of your characters, nor have elements that can inspire events that would further the plot? Are you freaking kidding me!
Okay, okay let’s just say you aren’t scared or lazy, in that case you’re an overthinker. My advice from my completely non-professional experience is to meditate and tell your mind to shut the hell up!
Not only are you overthinking it, but you’re a perfectionist too.
You have a beautiful Sistine Chapel –esque version of what your novel is and that first draft can’t even pass for finger painting. It’s alright. You go from finger painting to shapes and figures to shadow drawing to trompe l’ oeil to advanced painting. And then a couple years later you might be Michelangelo. That’s the revision process. Get over it, every writer does it.
So just freaking Finish the Novel Already!
