We Are a Part of Society
Sometimes we forget that we are a part of society. We sometimes feel like a grain of sand in a beach, too small to make a difference. We’ll cite the media, government, but you know who else comprises of society? You, me and the neighbors; together we make up society. Instead of feeling like we are too small and can’t make a difference we should owe up to the power we do have.
We aren’t the ones in charge of the new fall programming at MTV or BET, true, but we are not as powerless as we think. We can tell our daughters, nieces, and nephews how beautiful they are and know that our words have just as much effect, if not more, than the girls on the videos.

Do You Need a Mentor or a Clutch?
I hear all the this advice and one of them is get a writing mentor. Sure, a cheerleader is awesome, someone to egg you on, but do you need someone to tell you you’re good because you don’t believe it yourself?
If it is the latter I suggest you take a good dose of self-esteem and write what you know in your heart has the potential to be amazing despite your crappy first draft. Believing in yourself as a writer will take you wonders.
Don’t look for anyone else to tell you you’re good if you don’t first believe it for yourself because guess what? There are plenty of examples of artists of all mediums (written, visual, performance) who were lauded for their genius but still battled self-doubt.
That mentor might talk himself blue in the face self-esteem happens on the INSIDE!

Have A Little Faith
One common problem I run into on the road to finishing this damn novel is my storyline. As in I had one, I tried writing according to it, but that really didn’t happen. I would literally sit down and try to write what was supposed to happen, but guess what? My novel said otherwise.
I don’t know how what I wrote yesterday is going to fit in the overall storyline. To this I say who cares? Just write already.
You don’t have use everything in your story. Write it some more, maybe the pieces will begin to fit as the story unfolds.
In fact what you’ve written can serve as back story that you never divulge to the reader. In high school, one of my English teachers let on that Mr. Hyde was a whore monger even though there was no mention of it explicitly in the novel. Her reply? What else would a man of ill repute be doing in the middle of the night? Not playing Parcheesi.
Read it again some days later, and ask yourself more questions. Do I like the way this passage flows? Does it expose more about the characters? Do you like it? And why? If not figure out why, but don’t delete it, unless it feels right to do so, and even then I would use caution. You never know.
Faith Isn’t Just for Religion
This is also a good point to bring out that even though you can’t see how your most recently penned passage fits you have to have faith that either it will fit later or bring you closer to what your novel looks or doesn’t look like.
