The Triumphs and the Downgrades
This past Saturday I had a wonderful reading with some of the Ladies of La Pluma y La Tinta at Brownstone Books. It was awesome. I was nervous. The audience laughed. They didn’t laugh. Did I mention I was nervous? Sweat soaked pits and the stains they leave behind reared their ugly head for a second time. (The first time was when Raquel aka The Jaded NYer asked me to read on the fly at the previous reading. But I didn’t tell you about that because I am still struggling with a time frame for this ol here blog.)
My ever encouraging mother brought me flowers. People gave me feedback. They said they loved the title of the novel, they said they really visualize what was going on. And to my own ears I could hear what was wrong with my novel. It’s flow is still off, not to my liking at all. Setting up a scene is still very blocky and a little inelegant. I could hear that from my own telling, but also compared to the other women’s work, which I thought was freaking brilliant. La Pluma y La Tinta needs an honorary member. MEE!!
It made me want to go home and write some more. It energized me, it left me feeling effervescent (a word I wasn’t sure what it meant, but I was sure I was using it the right way).
And then just yesterday I ran into an administrator from my college while at work! I was mortified. Where do I work pray tell? In retail as an associate and that’s all Imma say. What’s even more is that this is not the first time I’ve run into a college associate at work and been mortified beyond belief.
Speaking with this blast from the past, it struck me, how much time has passed since I’ve graduated. I told her my plans to get my MFA in Creative Writing. Speaking about it made them so much more concrete. It’s so close I can taste it. So here’s to more sessions at WriteinBK, better writing and a future that fully takes advantage of all my creative abilities.
